Health sector needs attention for more research

Warangal Urban: The Kakatiya Institute of Technology and Science, Warangal (KITSW) conducted a talk on ‘Artificial Heart and Research and Educational Institutions’ for the development of research activity among engineering faculty at its campus on Saturday.

KITS Director Dr Y Manohar said that noted cardiologist and professor of medicine, University of Pittsburgh, US, and chairman SHARE (Science Health Allied Research & Education) Dr Pesara Sudhakar Reddy was the chief guest at the programme.

In his address, Dr Sudhakar Reddy said that there was a lot of scope for engineering and medical professionals to collaborate and invent technologies for health and safety of poor people.

“Artificial heart has two electro-mechanical pumps. These push blood to work heart muscles and facilitate blood circulate. There were 2,800 artificial hearts transplanted till 2015 in the US.

But in India, total transplantations conducted were only 350. All Indian Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has completed 50 transplantations since 1994. After transplantation, maintenance challenges is difficult in India,” he added. He also gave details about the cost of the artificial heart in India and the US.
