Farmers of Mancherial happy over Mission Kakatiya

Mancherial: Restoration of minor irrigation tanks, under the ambitious Mission Kakatiya project of State government, is being done at a fast pace.

Thousands of acres of agriculture land are already getting water for irrigation, bringing cheer to the agrarian community in Mancherial district.
Mancherial district has 952 irrigation tanks comprising an ayacut of 82,042 acres.

 A total of 147 tanks were rejuvenated in the first phase of Mission Kakatiya in 2015, 175 tanks were revitalised in the second and third editions of the programme as against the target 273 for 2016 and 2017.  As many as 36 tanks are currently undergoing renovation in the fourth phase aimed at bringing a new lease of life to 63 water bodies.

“The remaining 440 tanks including check dams and ponds are yet to be renovated. But, most of them are situated in private lands and some of them are found in lands belonging to Forest Department. However, efforts are on to revive the water bodies, left in the previous phases of the programme,” M Venugopal Rao, Executive Engineer of Irrigation Department told Telangana Today.

“The works related to Phase II and III are progressing at a considerably higher speed. They will be completed by March 2018 and May of 2018, respectively,” Rao added.

Rao said funds would be allocated for the remaining 27 tanks of the fourth edition in the Budget 2018-19 and the works would start once administrative sanction was accorded. The estimated value of renovation taken up in the four phases is over Rs 150 crore. On an average, Rs 43 crore had been spent on rejuvenating the tanks, he added.

A total of 11, 234 acres of agriculture lands have benefitted from the renovation of 147 tanks in the maiden phase of Mission Kakatiya. Over 30,000 acres of agriculture fields would be provided with water for irrigation following revitalisaiton of 330 tanks in the later phases of the programme.

Farmers are able to grow multiple crops due to availability of water in these tanks and are gradually registering profits in farming like never before.
