TS Excise clerical staff want promotions

Mancherial: K Thirupati, a Junior Assistant in Prohibition and Excise Department, Mancherial division, has not been given promotion even once from the date of joining.

He was the topper of the entrance held for filling the posts 17 years ago. His batch mate working with Revenue Department was elevated to Revenue Divisional Officer.

The above instance illustrates how clerical staff employees working with Prohibition and Excise Department were deprived of promotions even after serving for several years.

The employees are running from pillar to post seeking promotion. They are burdened with severe workload due to staff crunch in divisions and stations across the State. They are forced to work for 12 hours a day.

Suddala Rajaiah Goud, State president of Junior Assistants Association of Prohibition and Excise Department, told Telangana Today that they had already submitted representation to Excise Minister over the issue and the government was making efforts to promote initial staff who joined long ago and to provide promotions to the existing employees, soon.

The president, however, regretted that the size of initial staff—office subordinates and junior assistants—has not been increased since 40 years. “The department is being reorganised in the wake of bifurcation of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Meanwhile, both State and district-level posts were raised following the creation of new districts, but lower cadre posts were not increased,” he said.

Every office of Superintendent should have eight Junior Assistants and every Station House Officer should have one Junior Assistant. Most of the offices have barely two Junior Assistant.

Consequently, they are burdened with excessive workload. “The excessive workload is leaving an adverse impact on health. Also, we are unable to spare time for family members,” another Junior Assistant said.
