Jayashankar Bhupalpally: Residents of villages located along the Warangal-Bhupalpalluy-Kaleshwaram road have urged the government to take steps to curb accidents caused by sand lorries. There has been a rise in the road accidents in the district in the last couple of months.

People have been demanding that the government should cut the number of sand lorries at least by 50 per cent so as to contain the accidents. Two people were killed in accidents caused by sand lorries in the district in last one week.

In the meeting, Karnan directed officials of the transport, forest and TSMDC to put checkposts on road, check speed of lorries and also inspect licences of drivers. Transport Department has asked for five Assistant Motor Vehicle Inspectors (AMVIs).

Meanwhile, a senior officials said Telangana State Mineral Development Corporation (TSMDC) should reduce online booking of sand to decrease the number of sand lorries plying on the road per day. “TSMDC should also think about safety of people. Whatever steps are being taken by the district administration are interim ones, reduction in the number as well diversion of vehicles through another route can mitigate the problem,” he added.
