HYDERABAD: A few female scholars of the Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) have alleged that there is an unnecessary curfew for female students, which is not welcome in a democratic learning atmosphere.

“There is an unwritten rule on the campus that a girl cannot leave her hostel before 8 am, even if she wants to take a morning walk. Universities are supposed to be free academic spaces, but female research scholars are expected to close their books and leave the library at 7 pm and return to the hostel. It is discriminatory as research scholars need constant access to books. The same rules do not apply to male students,” a student of the University says.

She adds that many people do not speak up against the discrimination as they fear that a complaint could land them in trouble.

The warden of the women’s hostel says, “Students can enter and leave the hostel between 8 am and 8 pm, but we do let students stay out until 10 pm if they put in special requests beforehand. We normally don’t deny such requests.”
