SCR Police arrest person carrying gold jewellery worth Rs 37 lakh

Hyderabad: Secunderabad Railway Police on Thursday arrested a person who was transporting gold and silver articles worth 37 lakh without valid documents.

The suspect, was identified as Rameswara Yadav, was carrying the ornaments from Vizag to deliver to jewellery merchants in the city.

According to the police, the suspect works for Mathura Express Courier, which specialises in transporting gold and silver.

Rameswara alighted from the Godavari Express which arrived from Vizag on Thursday morning, and was walking towards the exit when RPF personnel nabbed him and checked his luggage and identity. On being asked for documents related to the jewellery he was carrying, he said he didn't have documents.

The jewellery was seized at the police station and he was arrested. “The gold jewellery weighing 947 gm and silver articles 477 gm, all worth `37 lakh, were seized from his possession. The suspect will be produced in court,” said Secunderabad railway police SP G. Ashok Kumar.

Rameswar, who has been working for the courier company for the past few years, travels only by AC coaches, police said.

According to investigating officials, during inquiry Rameswar claimed that the jewellery was accounted for but the documents were in possession of the supplier and the receivers in the city.

The jewellery was wrapped in 12 packets, of which six were to be delivered in the city and another six were to be delivered to Mumbai merchants. Police said they would write to the Income Tax department and the commercial tax department, for further action.
