Hyderabad: The State government is considering alternative solutions for filling posts of Mandal Education Officers (MEOs) which have been vacant for more than 13 years due to court orders. These options will be explored based on the outcome of the Hyderabad High Court hearing scheduled to be held on March 31.

Only 43 out of 528 MEO posts are filled with regular MEOs, while interim arrangements have been made for the remaining 485 posts with the headmasters kept in additional charge as in-charge MEOs.

Raising the issue during Question Hour in the State Legislative Council on Tuesday, MLCs N Ramachandra Rao, Paturi Sudharkar Reddy and others stated that primary education was severely affected due to in-charge MEOs.

They pointed out that the posts should be filled through promotion and due to court disputes, the posts were lying vacant since 2005. They demanded that the issue be resolved before commencement of the next academic year in June.

Replying to a question, Deputy Chief Minister and Education Minister Kadiam Srihari admitted that in the absence of regular MEOs, primary school education was suffering and interim arrangements were made with in-charge MEOs.

He said due to efforts of Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, the State government succeeded in getting the President of India to issue orders for amending the Unified Service Rules as per the Supreme Court directions.

“However, some teachers challenged the Presidential Order in the High Court which ordered maintenance of status quo. We are hopeful to get a favourable order from the High Court and asked the Advocate General to appear for the hearing on behalf of the State government. If there is no immediate respite, we will consult the stakeholders to find an amicable alternative solution to the problem and fill the vacant posts before commencement of the next academic year,” the Deputy Chief Minister said.
