New Rules For Solid waste management in Greater City

Telangana state government will bring the new rules for  solid waste management.Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI) has been assigned the task of preparing draft solid waste management policy guidelines in consultation with different stakeholders.

In State-level Advisory Board meeting,tje  Municipal Administration and Urban Development Principal Secretary Arvind Kumar took the decision on this issue on Monday.

Kumar issued instructions to Pollution Control Board officials to inspect malls, function halls, hotels and hospitals to ascertain the steps being taken for segregation and storage for solid waste and submit a report at the earliest. This apart, he directed the GHMC officials to obtain a list of abandoned quarries from the Mining Department to explore possibilities of using them as dumping yards.

Solid waste management has been a challenge for municipal bodies. In Hyderabad alone, nearly 4,000 metric tonnes of waste is generated every day and it is transferred to different transfer stations. As a means to generate wealth from waste, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation is making Swachh auto drivers segregate dry and wet waste and the recyclable waste is sold at dry resource centres. 

A comprehensive survey of rag pickers should be conducted and suggest different measures to utilise their services effectively in solid waste management in urban local bodies, he added. All the urban local bodies have been asked to implement the driver-cum-owner scheme, which envisages using Swachh autos for door to door collection of solid waste. CDMA TK Sridevi, GHMC Commissioner Janardhan Reddy, officials from the Pollution Control Board and others participated in the meeting.
