To provide sufficient water to the wild animals in summer, officials of the Forest Department in the district have been taking several steps.

As a part of the efforts, as many as 12 saucer pits, 25 cement rings and 30 percolation tanks have been set up in the north and south range of Eturunagaram wildlife sanctuary with the proactive initiative of District forest officer (DFO) T Ravi Kiran.Eturunagaram wildlife sanctuary, one of the oldest wildlife sanctuaries in Telangana, is spread over 806 sq km in the district and the maximum recorded temperature in the past has been 47 degree Celsius.

Officials are also setting up cameras around water bodies to record the movement of animals and to know the number of animals.

Eturnagaram Forest Divisional Officer (FDO) Pradeep Kumar Setty said they were assessing the need to provide food and water to these animals by setting camera traps. “These cameras would also help us in finding poachers besides knowing the presence of animals,” he added.

Volunteers from Forest Department’s head office also conducted an survey of the animals and their habitat about 15 days ago.“We would like to set up camera traps at 32 more locations in addition to eight locations as they are useful in many ways,” he said and added that speed limit of 30 km/hr would be strictly implemented under the wildlife sanctuary limits. He said stern action would be initiated against poachers.

It is said that increasing availability of water in the forest area would prevent wild animals from straying into human habitations in search of water and thereby check man-animal conflict on forest fringe areas. Two Indian bisons had strayed recently and according to sources, the population of the Indian bisons (Gaur) is on the rise.
