For someone who is aiming to turn a pro in the qualifying tournament in the U.K. next month, Lucky Vatnani may not have set the venue agog, but is highly satisfied with his runner-up position in the recently-concluded RKG first Indian 10Red Snooker Tournament at Nainital Boats Club.

The 32-year-old has to make it to the semifinal in any one of the three events which are part of the qualifying tournament facilitating 12 players to become pros.

The Hyderabadi was among 32 players from across the country who vied for top honours in Nainital and was visibly pleased with himself as he defeated the current Asian team gold medallist Laxman Rawat (6-2) in the semifinal before losing to former Asian Games medallist Brijesh Damani (5-7) in the final.

“It was an exciting final where I was leading 4-1 in the first session after which my gritty opponent fought back well by keeping it tight and putting me under pressure. In the final of 2015 RKG Series, I won against him to pick my first All India title,” Vatnani told The Hindu.

“My practice has been great after installing the best available snooker table at the Cue Sports Academy in Nanakaramguda, thanks to Capt. P.V.K. Mohan,” he said.

“I must thank my sponsors Nuziveedu Seeds for their wonderful support which enables me to fully focus on my sport and not worry about anything else,” he said.

“The qualifying tournament in the U.K. is the toughest event as best amateur players from around the world will take part. All the training at Star Academy in the U.K. and some coaching will set me up nicely for the upcoming events in India,” signs off an optimistic Vatnani.
