India Ended the Campaign with a Total of 66 medals

India’s performance in the 2018 edition of the Commonwealth Games is ‘marginal’, reveals data. However the number of gold medals clinched has seen a steep rise, it increased from 15 in 2014 to 26 in 2018.

The nation ended the campaign with a total of 66 medals in 9 of the 18 sports at the CWG (gold cost) and stood at 3rd position in the medal table. While in the 2014 edition it won 64, the country’s medal score crossed 100 in 2010 when Delhi hosted it. While it stood at 5th position in 2014 and 2nd in 2010 edition, the rank fell then on. Data shows, that going by the numbers of medals clinched, it’s a marginal improvement in India’s performance.The highest number of gold medals India won was 38 in 2010 and 27 in silver. While in 2014, number of gold was 15, 20 silver, 19 bronze. But it increases in the 4th edition to 26 gold, 20 silver and 20 bronze. This is about 8% of all the medals on offer in the 2018 edition. Dronacharya awardee, athletics Mr. Nagapuri Ramesh said, “This edition of CWG was a mix of experienced and young (freshers) participants.

Though the total number of medals won were  66 across various disciplines, the number of gold medals secured is  high. In this edition we have seen remarkable performances in badminton, shooting Weightlifting. The number stood at 66 medals but the country has seen a tremendous increase in participation. There are several academics that run year long training participants for international level games, awareness and even perks has help increase participation.”

Data provided by Information portal Factly ,shows ,  In 2006, India won medals in  7 of the 16 sports that were part of the competition( Wrestling, Archery, Tennis & Judo)  where India was strong were not included in that edition. In 2010,  when New Delhi hosted , India  won medals in 12 of the 17 sports (Wrestling, Archery & Tennis). In 2014 , India again won medals in 12 of the 17 sports (Judo & Powerlifting)  were included in this edition while Archery & Tennis were excluded. In 2018 games, India won medals in 9 of the 18 sports that were part of the competition.

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) holds the games every four years.  The latest version of the CWG consist of compulsory games in disciplines like aquatic (swimming), athletics, athletics (para), badminton, cycling (road), boxing, gymnastics (artistic), Hockey (men and women), Judo, lawn, bowls, lawn bowls (para), Netball(women), Rugby sevens (men & women), squash, table tennis, triathlon, weightlifting, power lifting (para) and wrestling (freestyle).
