Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has decided to collect bulk garbage charges from city hoteliers and other food joints. The corporation has decided to levy Rs 2.36 per kg where quantity of garbage has to be self declared. The Corporation would levy 100 per cent penalty if quantities are manipulated during the inspection.

As per the Municipal Solid Waste Management rules, every establishment generating over 50 kgs of garbage, has to install a compost unit at its premises. They hand over the bulk garbage produced to the civic body. The restaurant owners should self assess the bulk garbage which will be certified by assistant medical officers for health.

The civic body would spend 40 per cent of the revenue generated to the “swachh auto tippers” and in absence of them the amount will be deposited into the corporations account.Earlier, the  Corporation has issued directions to the bulk generating garbage units like hotels, restaurants, function halls and other bulk generators in the twin cities to install compost units. As per Solid Waste Managements Rules 2017, it is mandatory for hotels, restaurants, function halls and other bulk generators generating garbage of more than 50 kgs, to have a compost unit in their premises.

On the day to day basis, the GHMC collects garbage from their premises and transport to dumping yard and it wants the bulk generators to convert the garbage into compost.
