With only two weeks left for campaigning to end in the Karnataka Assembly elections, it is still not clear whether various Telugu leaders from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh would campaign in that state, especially in areas with significant Telugu population, or not. Though several speculative statements have been aired by various sources, nothing has been finalized yet.

The Telugu Desam (TD) party said that it would campaign against the BJP in the Karnataka State elections, whereas the Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao had announced that he was ready to campaign in support of the Janata Dal (S) led by Deve Gowda, if requested by that party. Sources in TRS said Mr Rao has not received any call from the JD (S) leadership.

The JD (S) has, meanwhile, requested Jana Sena chief Pawan Kalyan to campaign in favour of their party candidates, who it is reported, has agreed. A few days ago, senior JD (S) leader and party spokesperson Ramesh Babu said, “Pawan Kalyan has agreed to campaign for our party candidates. His presence will certainly help us.”Jana Sena leaders, however, say that they have not yet discussed or finalized Mr Kalyan’s Karnataka tour programme.

The AICC has named former Union Minister and actor K Chiranjeevi as a campaigner for the Karnataka Assembly elections as part of its list released with names of campaigners from across the country. Mr Chiranjeevi had campaigned in the previous Karnataka Assembly elections also in several constituencies with significant Telugu people. The AP State Congress sources said that the tour schedule of Chiranjeevi was not yet finalized, but APCC president Raghuveera Reddy too would campaign in Karnataka.

After breaking its alliance with the BJP in protest against the denial of the Special Category Status to Andhra Pradesh, the TD leaders said that the party leaders would campaign against the BJP in Karnataka. Deputy Chief Minister KE Krishna Murthy had appealed to Telugu speaking people of Karnataka to vote against the BJP recently in Bengaluru. Yet, no other Telugu Desam leader has yet formally visited Karnataka to campaign against their former ally.

To prove the seriousness of their anti-saffron party credentials, TD sources say that they have started vigorous online campaign against the BJP targeting Telugu people living in Karnataka. TD is voicing its anger to them against the injustices done by the BJP. But the party has not announced a specific campaign programme by any major leader.
