Vice-Admiral Pradeep Chauhan said over a half of India faces high to extremely high water scarcity caused by climate change.

Pointing out at that the impact of climate change has also a security dimension as ISIS had choked off water to some towns by closing the gates of the Ramadi dam, he said, “Climate change fuels and accelerates terrorism and strengthens recruiting efforts by groups such as the ISI and boko Haram, allowing them to recruit more easily, operate more freely and control civilian populations”.

“Water scarcity also shapes the geopolitical order when states engage in direct competition with neighbours over shrinking water supplies,” the vice-admiral said pointing to the water issues with Pakistan.
