Hyderabad: Row over licences for shops at 470-year-old ashoorkhana

Hyderabad: A controversy erupted after the Telangana State Wakf Board allowed new shops to be set up on the premises of the historic ashoorkhana housing the Naal-e-Mubarak
The ashoorkhana, which was constructed during the Qutb Shahi rule about 470 years ago, has been under the direct management of the Wakf Board for the last few years.
“Some people have obtained permission from the Wakf Board and are setting up a garments store in the Naqqar Khana located on the premises of the ashoorkhana. I had asked the board to intervene and stop the work,” said former MIM MLC Altaf Hyder Razvi.
The Board had earlier issued permission for setting up a showroom in the premises two year ago.
However, the permission was rescinded after the intervention of the leaders from the Shia community.
“The subject was not discussed in the Board meeting nor did anyone take suggestion or opinion of the community,” the MLC complained.
The Naal-e-Mubarak, a relic is about 470 years old. The alams (standards) were kept in the building containing a portion of the war helmet (Naal) of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad.
Earlier, the standards were kept in Golconda Fort and shifted to Hyderabad after its construction. Historians claim that the alam was kept in a palace near Charminar and later moved here.
