Will the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) stage a comeback in Telangana? Yes, say party leaders who claim it would play a key role in the formation of the State government during the next elections.

The party has been conducting a Mini-Mahanadu, the party’s annual conference, in all the five districts of erstwhile Warangal district. Senior leaders Revuri Prakash Reddy and Garikapati Mohan Rao have urged party cadre not to lose morale, saying the party would stay afloat in the State. “TDP has been empowering the backward classes (BC) and downtrodden. Many from these communities have risen to prominence in the political field. These communities are forever indebted to the party,” the leaders claimed.Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Prakash Reddy said his party would win anywhere between 25 to 30 Assembly seats in next State elections. Even if Congress or TRS emerges as the single largest party, the support of TDP legislators would be crucial in forming the government, he added.

He said the TDP still has a mass base and loyal cadre, which no other party in the State can boast of.The structure of the party remained intact despite migration of some leaders to TRS, Mr. Prakash Reddy said. “Some leaders may have departed, but not the party cadre. They are still here and our party flags are seen in every village across the State,” he pointed out.The party also accorded due representation in politics to all communities and women, leaders said. It helped women become leaders of self-help groups (SHG) and education and water management committees in villages. Such measures had ensured that the party still retained village-level loyalty among the people. The leaders did not rule out an alliance with the TRS. They felt that as many TRS leaders were originally from TDP, they would favour the latter over other parties.

Khammam Special Correspondet writes: The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) will soon emerge as a force to reckon with in Telangana and will play a pivotal role in forming the government after the 2019 elections in the State, said the party Polit Bureau member Nama Nageswara Rao.The TDP leadership has hinted at the party’s prospective alliances in the next elections and one political party has expressed its willingness to sail with the TDP in the next hustings. With still a year to go for the next general elections, a decision in this regard will be taken by the party leadership at an appropriate time under the aegis of the party supremo N. Chandrababu Naidu, he said.Addressing the Khammam parliamentary constituency level Mini-Mahanadu meeting held here on Monday, Mr. Rao, the former Khammam MP, said the TDP has a strong strength of loyal party cadres, who form the backbone of the organisation.

Referring to the splendid victory of the TDP in the 2013 gram panchayat elections in the erstwhile Khammam district, he exhorted the party cadre to work hard to help the party repeat its impressive show in the next gram panchayat elections. The Mini-Mahanadu will deliberate on wide-ranging issues including unabated farmer suicides, unemployment and deficiencies plaguing education and health sectors, Mr. Rao said. The party MLA from Sattupalli Sandra Venkata Veeraiah came down heavily on the TRS government accusing it of encouraging defections, thrusting dictatorial regime, and failing to deliver on its major poll promises such as two-bedroom houses to all homeless and three-acre land each to all landless dalit families. The TRS dispensation has introduced the Rythu Bandhu scheme with an eye on next elections without addressing the serious problems like lack of remunerative prices grappling the farmers and causing agrarian distress, he charged. “All the democratic forces should join hands to expose the TRS’s misrule and make it bite the dust in the next panchayat elections and the general elections respectively,” he said.

The TDP district president T. Brahmaiah and others spoke.

NIZAMABAD Special Correspondent writes: TDP senior leader and Ex-MLA A. Annapoornamma has said that the party will regain its glory in future with the hard work and under the direction of its national president N. Chandrababu Naidu.Addressing the partyMini-Mahanadu here on Monday, she said the TRS and other political parties thought that the TDP would disappear after the formation of Telangana but the party cadres attending this meeting was the indication of its strength. At present the party might be passing through a critical phase but it would face challenges boldly with the support of the cadre, she said. She said that the TRS government had failed miserably to keep its core promises of distribution of three acre land to each dalit family, sanction of double bedroom houses to homeless people and 12% reservation to religious minorities and STs. Ms. Annapoornamma later administered oath of office to the TDP’s newly-appointed district president Bagarthi Baga Reddy. The party State vice-president Amaranath Babu also spoke.
