Babli project in Maharashtra received huge inflows of water

Irrigation projects which had hit dead storage level have started receiving inflows thanks to heavy rains in upstream states.

On the Godavari, the Babli project in Maharashtra received huge inflows enabling water to be released downstream to the Sriramsagar project in Telangana on Monday.The water in the Narayanpur project on the Krishna river in Karnataka was released downstream to the Jurala project in Mahbubnagar.The fresh inflows came as a relief to meet drinking and irrigation water needs in TS districts.

Water was released from the Babli project to Sriramsagar project on Monday ahead of schedule. Due to heavy rains in Maharashtra, water flow increased in the river Godavari and  Maharashtra irrigation officials lifted four gates of the Babli project, releasing water downstream. Initially, they released 20,000 cusecs and later increased it to 98873 cusecs. Villagers on the banks of the river Godavari in Telangana and Maharashtra were alerted about the sudden inflows into the river.

As per Supreme Court directives, Maharashtra has to release water from the Babli project on July 1.
