Houses in Anna Nagar Colony in Ward 3 of the Secunderabad Cantonment Board are getting contaminated water through their municipal taps.

Residents complain that they get water only once in four days but that is not potable. They expressed the fear that drain water from a leaking sewerage line might be entering the pipes supplying drinking water.Anna Nagar resident M.U. Murali said, “The water is black in colour, with dirt and hair in it. We have lodged a complaint but in vain.”Residents even took a bottle of water of the tap water to show the SCB officials.

Mr Murali said, “As many people who are living in the slums here cannot even afford to buy water from private suppliers, we wait for 10-15 minutes to get normal water.” When contacted, Ward 3 elected member P. Bhagyashree said, “When we received a complaint about this the last time, we tried find out the reason. We couldn’t find any sewerage connection interrupting the drinking water pipeline, so we came up with a new line and the problem was solved. The problem has started again, and this might be due to issues in individual connections.”

Congress leader Manne Krishank said, “When the SCB is charging large sums of money, it is their responsibility to provide clean drinking water. Several complaints have been ignored. This is happening for long and people are forced to consume drainage water.”
