A 44-year-old cow elephant, Jamuna, died following prolonged illness at the Nehru Zoological Park on Wednesday.
A postmortem report showed lung congestion, myocardial hemorrhage in the heart, congestion in liver, intestine among others. The cause of death was determined as chronic respiratory infection / enteritis / enemiasis. Jamuna fell ill after spraining her hind legs on March 14, zoo veterin-arian Dr M. Navin Ku-mar said. Jamuna was being treated since then and was under observation. As a precaution, zoo officials had contacted Dr Manoharan, wild-life veterinary officer, TN, for a second opinion.
