The government will provide irrigation for an additional one lakh acres under the Kalvakurthi project this year. The project had provided irrigation to 2.5 lakh acres in the district last year.

Irrigation minister T. Harish Rao said: “The government has set a target of bringing 3.6 lakh acres under irrigation this year. I have asked the Nagarkurnool collector to prepare an action plan.”Mr Harish Rao said the government would release Rs 13 crore for land acquisition for the Kal-vakurthi project.

He was reviewing progress of works on the Kalvakurthi, Dindi, Palamuru and Kaleshwaram projects here on Wednesday. Mr Rao directed the Nalgonda collector to ensure that water was released under the Musi project before July 15. He said 26,000 more acres would be brought under the Musi project this year.

Mr Rao also reviewed the chain-link tanks system with major and medium-sized projects.“Government records say that 250 tmc ft can be utilised using minor irrigation projects. The Chief Minister is mooting that tanks can be filled up with the 250 tmc ft of water,” Mr Rao said. This water can be used to minimise the impact of rain shortage in the state.
