After highlighting the blocking of seats in medical colleges especially for postgraduate students, activists and the Telangana Engineering Student Joint Action Committee have alleged that private engineering colleges were blocking seats so that they can sell them after counselling in the management quota.

Mr Sharan Raichur, state president, Telangana Engineering Students Joint Action Committee, said, “Students apply in the B category and the colleges should allot the seats depending on the marks in the JEE-Mains but the private engineering colleges are selling the management seats for huge prices.”

“Due to this, poor and deserving students are not getting seat allotment in the B category in the colleges. Many students have complained to us about this, which is injustice to the deserving students,” Mr Raichur told this newspaper. A student on the condition of anonymity said, “I qualified in the JEE-Mains and applied for B-category seat in a famous engineering college in the state but they demanded lakhs of rupees to admit me. As I was not ready to leave the opportunity, I was forced to pay Rs 2.5 lakh to get the seat in the electronics branch.”

The student said the college had asked him to pay Rs 5 lakh to Rs 6 lakh for the seat. “After we requested we got the seat for Rs 2.5 lakh. Generally an engineering student has to pay Rs 80,000 fees per year as fees but I am paying more for getting the seat which is unfair to students like us.”
