The sliding facility for the leftover Eamcet seats is being handed over to institutions, a move which is being opposed by experts who suggest that it should be done by the convener for transparency. They said there was a chance that colleges would sell the leftover seats, denying deserving students an opportunity.

This is for the first time that Eamcet is giving colleges the option of internal sliding, after the maiden web counselling for admission into engineering courses. In web counselling, students who wish to change their course within the college can opt for internal sliding during the admission process.

The Eamcet convener has notified that leftover vacancies in private unaided engineering colleges will be filled via institutional spot admissions at the respective colleges. Candidates must contact the principal of the institutions to seek admission.Internal sliding at the institution will be conducted on July 30; colleges have to fill the leftover vacancies on July 31 and complete the process by August 3.

Mr Sharan Raichur, state president, Telangana Engineering Students Joint Action Committee, said, “Giving the option of internal sliding directly to colleges can lead to sale of leftover seats.”

An official on the condition of anonymity said, “The government had earlier promised to do counselling and had promised scholarships to students who opt for internal sliding. It changed the decision and allowed colleges to perform internal sliding.”

He said premium colleges could indulge in mischief and sell the leftover seats that were vacated by candidates who left to take admission in premier institutions like the IIT.

An education expert said, “Handing over institutional sliding to the colleges will invariably lead to selling of seats in premium colleges. This denies an opportunity to legitimate candidates. The government has not come up with guidelines and there is a possibility of the convener doing institution-level sliding online which will be a more transparent.”

Mr Srinivas Bodakunta, camp officer, TS-Eamcet, said that, “To prevent any mischief, we have given guidelines for the students on the official website.”
