Students in the state showing interest in English medium

For higher education, more number of students in Telangana are opting English medium rather than other mediums such as Telugu, Hindi, Urdu and Arabic. This is evident from the number of enrollments done for the degree courses through the Degree Online Services, Telangana (DOST) 2018.After the final phase of DOST counselling for admissions into 1,045 degree colleges, of the 2,00,223 students who got admitted into various courses, more than 1.60 lakh chose to study in the English medium. About 37,536 candidates opted for Telugu medium while only 77 students opted for Arabic, 49 for Hindi and 1,522 for Urdu mediums. For the Marathi medium, only five students enrolled this year.


According to the statistics available with the DOST office, colleges under the Osmania University witnessed maximum i.e. 71,626 admissions under English medium and in case of Telugu medium, Kakatiya University got 12,884 admissions which is highest among all other varsities in the State.Gender-wise, of teh 2,00,223 admission confirmations by the candidates, 1,07,081 constituted women and 93,142 were men.


“Its good sign for the State that more women are joining various degree courses,” Prof. R Limbadri, Convenor, DOST and Vice-Chairman-I, Telangana State Council of Higher Education said.


Zero Admission Colleges


This year, not a single student chose to study in about 53 colleges under six state universities. While there were 10,820 seats in those institutions, no candidate had made final admission confirmation. About 21 colleges under Kakatiya University have registered zero admissions, highest among all varsities. Similarly, 10 colleges under Mahatma Gandhi University and nine under Osmania University got zero enrollments.


This apart, over 110 colleges including the government ones like Kakatiya Government College, Hanamkonda, SR and BGNR Government, Arts and Science College, Khammam, Government City College, Hyderabad, Government Degree College, Siddipet and Government Degree College for Women among others got more than 80 per cent admissions.


This year, 45,067 students including 29,351 in government, 12,411 in government (autonomous), 2,701 university (autonomous) and 604 in university colleges have enrolled whereas private unaided colleges got 1,43,983 admissions.
