BJP MLA G. Kishan Reddy asked Governer E.S.L. Narasimhan on Thursday to answer why he praised the functioning of state universities in Telangana state during the vice-chancellors’ conference held on Wednesday.  He asked the Governor to explain whether universities deserve to be praised for having a 70 per cent vacancy in teacher posts and some departments in OU are working with just one professor.

Hostel messes also have not opened even after commencement of the new academic year. Mr Reddy said that the state  universities in TS had  turned from bad to worse under TRS rule. Mr Reddy threw a volley of questions at the Governor on the worse conditions prevailing in universities and demanded that the Governor tour all universities to get first hand information about the pathetic conditions prevailing on campuses, instead of praising them based on “fake reports” submitted by the Deputy Chief Minister and education minister Kadiam Srihari and other education department officials.

“On one hand, the TRS government makes tall claims of making the state open defecation free. On the other hand, the students in Osmania University and all other state universities defecate in the open due to the lack of toilets. They bathe in the open too. The governor should visit OU campus in the morning to see all these things with his own eyes,” Mr Kishan Reddy said.

“Does the Governor know that the four old universities in the state — Osmania, Kakatiya, JNTUH and Telugu universities are functioning with half of the faculty? Does he know that some of the departments in these universities are functioning with one or zero professors?” Mr Reddy questioned. Mr Reddy lashed out at Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao for failing to visit even a single campus in his over four-year rule.

“The Chief Minister has time to visit his farmhouse every week. But he did not have time to visit the campus these four years. He should realise that it is because of the university students who spearheaded the Telangana statehood movement and sacrificed their lives, that Telangana state became a reality and he could become the Chief Minister. We demand that Mr Rao immediately release the funds to all universities, develop facilities and take up faculty recruitment programmes to improve the condition on the campuses,” Mr Kishan Reddy said.
