Kanti Velugu: 2.19 lakh people have been screened

About 75 per cent of the people who were screened under the prestigious Kanti Velugu scheme so far have been detected with one eye problem or the other, indicating the importance of the eye screening programme in the State. Within three days of the launch of the programme, around 2.19 lakh people have been screened under Kanti Velugu, with 1,07,361 people screened in 803 camps across the State on Friday.


Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao formally launched the Kanti Velugu free eye screening scheme on the occasion of Independence Day targeting eye screening of the entire State’s population of 3.7 crore. Patients who are detected with eye problems will be treated free of cost, including providing spectacles and carrying out cataract surgeries, among others. 


According to official data, 35,626 people have been diagnosed as having cataract, with 1,598 having complications. The number of referrals touched over 38,000 on day 3 while over 23,600 people given reading glasses. Prescriptions for spectacles have been given to 41,337 people so far.Interestingly, women coming to the camps have crossed 1.25 lakh against a little over 93,000 men.
