Goods and Services Tax (GST) is an indirect tax (or consumption tax) levied in India on the supply of goods and services. GST is levied at every step in the production process, but is meant to be refunded to all parties in the various stages of production other than the final consumer.

Hyderabad: Sleuths of the Legal Metrology Department have booked 125 cases against city-based commercial stores including Ratnadeep, Heritage Market, More Super Market, Spencers, Big Bazar, Vijetha Super Market and Mahaveer Electrical, for violation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Legal Metrology rules.

It was found that these commercial stores were selling products like Asian Paints, perfumes, mobile chargers, deodorants, Bajaj Heaters and other products in gross violation of the altered GST slabs.

The investigators following complaints, carried out a cycle of inspections across city-based shopping malls and supermarkets in Manikonda, Madhapur, Hitech City, Bachupally, Kompally, Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Nampally, Serilingampally, Gachibowli, Begam Bazar, Kukatpally, Miyapur, Ameerpet and some other places in Greater Hyderabad region.

According to the officials, the Central government has reduced GST rates on some products and totally removed it from a few other products. However, certain commercial stores continue to sell them at earlier prices against the current reduced GST slabs.

On receiving several complaints from consumers regarding shopping malls and super markets on GST violations, the Legal Metrology Department conducted a number of raids on Thursday.
