TS bags fourth rank in suicide rate across India

The suicide rate, according to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), puts Telangana (fourth) among the top five States in the country with maximum instances of persons attempting to end their lives.The number of suicides for a one lakh population, which is defined as the rate of suicides, in Telangana State was 26.5 during 2014, according to NCRB records. While, Puducherry had the highest suicide rate at 40.4, the all India rate (national average) of suicides during the time frame was close to 10.6. 

Considering the present population of Hyderabad at one crore under GHMC limits, roughly every year the State capital is losing 2,650 persons through suicides.While this being the case, a recent WHO report said that in India, youngsters between 15 years and 29 years of age group, accounted for the highest suicide rate for a one lakh population.

As the entire world is observing World Suicide Prevention Day on Sunday, it is, perhaps, a good time to take a pause and understand the enormity of the situation that suicides pose to the society, especially in the contest of Telangana, where rate of suicides are pretty high.

Causes for suicides

Is there any major cause behind so many suicides? The same NCRB census report, done between 2004 and 2014, points out that the major reason for suicides are invariably family problems. Close to 28 per cent of the suicides happened because of domestic or relationship issues. Another significant reason for suicides was illness, which was at 18 per cent.According to experts, usually, there were multiple factors that were usually involved for such drastic measures. Doctors said the young in India were not equipped to cope-up with failure, which leads to depression.

Untreated depression, stress due to unmet aspirations, substance abuse, relationship failures and no skills to manage stress are some of the major trigger points that drive persons, especially youngsters, towards taking the extreme step.
