In the wake of protests demanding the renovation of the Osmania General Hospital building, the grandson of Nizam VII, Nawab Najaf Ali Khan has written to Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan on Tuesday to direct the authorities to take up the repair work at the heritage building immediately. The protests for the dilapidated heritage structure were carried out in OGH and Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital by the Telangana Junior Doctors’ Association. The OGH Joint Action Committee has carried out protests for more than 100 days. Following which, the government promised to restore the building.

“The highest authority in the state has to intervene and save the building and also the people who come to the hospital despite the mushrooming private hospitals in the city. There are patients who come from the borders of Maharashtra and Karnataka. There are more than 1,000 patients everyday at the out-patient department of the hospital. Does it not become important to carry out the repairs which have been neglected for so long?” Najaf Ali Khan said.

The Nawab in his letter stated that the INTACH report had said that the building was fit but it had to be repaired. Khan had visited the hospital during the agitation and found that the leakages from the toilets and water pipes were not repaired and had been allowed to deteriorate.“There are 97,000 emergencies and 5,250 elective surgeries which are done in one year and yet the hospital is not being given its due,” he said.
