Established as the Regional Engineering College (REC) in 1959 in Warangal, National Institute of Technology (NIT) has emerged as one of the top technical institutions of India. NITW has been ranked 25 among all engineering institutes as per the India Rankings 2018 conducted by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), Ministry of Human Resource Development, and the Government of India. The yearlong diamond jubilee celebrations of the institute were inaugurated by Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu on Monday.

As the MHRD took a decision in principle to bring all the RECs in the country back into its fold, the REC Warangal was granted the status of a deemed university in 2002, and also renamed NITW. In 2007, it was given the status of an Institute of National Importance (INI).

More than 25 professors from across the globe visited the Institute as part of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

As a part of the Indo-UK Project, a number of British experts visited the Institute during 1994-98 and Faculty of RECW were given training opportunities in the UK in the field of Information technology. Similarly, senior Faculty of the Institute visited UK during the same time.

NFTDC will also sponsor some Ph.D scholarships for a period of six years.

The Institute has provided numerous exchange programmes for the students. A number of MoUs were signed with universities in Asia and elsewhere. In December 2017, an MoU was signed with Chang ‘An University, China, which was followed by signing of one more MoU with Universitdade de Santiago de Compostela (University of Santiago, Spain) during the International Staff Week in January, 2018. This MoU was signed under the Erasmus K-7 Scheme held by the Heritage Indian General Assembly. The Taiwan-India Presidents Forum, 2018 was another such international event, which saw participation from NIT Warangal, and culminated with signing of MoU with four leading Taiwanese Universities.
