Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao on Monday said the lack of comprehensive and crucial data on agricultural production and related issues in the State was hampering decision-making in the sector.

“There is a need to overcome difficulties arising out of lack of appropriate statistical data pertaining to food and agriculture sector. There is need for effecting some changes in certain traditional methods of farmers and study the advantages and disadvantages of ryots going in for the same crop,” the Chief Minister said.Chandrashekhar Rao was speaking at a high-level meeting at Pragathi Bhavan called to discuss various aspects of food processing industry, the process to follow in future while establishing them, involving IKP-women’s groups in the industry and exporting different types of agri-products to other States and countries.

Stating that the meeting was not to take a decision across the table, Chandrashekhar Rao said it was basically to understand issues pertaining to food processing. “Unfortunately, in the absence of appropriate statistical data, it is difficult to take decisions. We need to have data on agriculture produce, including paddy and fruits, as also to get to know the food needs of people,” he said, and emphasized the need for clubbing agriculture, horticulture and other related departments to achieve good results.“When this is done, dissatisfaction among farmers will fade away, and as a first step towards this, the TRS government established Rythu Samanvaya Samithis. The members of these committees need to be trained now,” he said.

Pointing out that the success of the farm sector could be achieved only if farmers were brought into the organised sector, he said the State needs to be divided into crop colonies, and the entire crop produced by farmers should be sold on demand. “Through food processing units proposed to be established by the State government, branded unadulterated products should hit the markets,” he said.Stating that farmers should accept cultivating crops in a regulated manner, the Chief Minister said crores of people were dependent on agriculture and horticulture in the State and hence these two departments should work in tandem towards fulfilling the aspirations of the farming community. “Telangana should top the country in agriculture, horticulture, food processing and export of processed food products to other States and countries. Telangana is a role model for the cause of farmers and anything can be achieved,” he said.

Listing the various initiatives already taken up by the State government, he said agriculture extension officers had been recruited, rectification and purification of land records had been completed and the extent of agricultural land was identified. “Now we need to ensure Minimum Support Price for agricultural produce. It’s a chain process and if the institutions are developed and improved, it can work wonders,” Chandrashekhar Rao said.
