GHMC commissioner M. Dana Kishore has instructed officials of the civic body and the Water Supply and Sewerage Board  to bring catch pits and manholes to the level of the road surface to make it safe for motorists. The GHMC was told to replace damaged manhole covers. The GHMC oversees 2,96,329 sewer manholes and 1,22,461 catch pits while the HMWS&SB has 1.85 lakh sewer manholes. Sources said there is a pothole for 30 every metres for domestic sewer lines and 100 metres for main trunk sewer lines. Every month, the GHMC replac-es nearly 35 damaged manhole covers. Of the 30 GHMC circles, only 14 have sewer lines.

The manhole and catch pit covers have ‘sunk’ either because of the reqular re-topping of roads or wear and tear. This makes it dangerous for motorists. During a review meeting Mr Kishore instructed officials of both the agencies to  address the issue at the earliest. To keep a check on cover replacements, a GHMC official said, data of the repaired site would be geo-tagged and uploaded on the ‘GHMC on the job’ app daily.
