Not long ago, women at Peddapalli town toiled in the fields as labourers to eke out a living with modest wages. But now, things have changed. These women have become entrepreneurs and are successfully running a canteen, serving food to people of the entire town, especially employees of the Collectorate.

During a review of the activities of women self-help groups, Collector A. Sri Devasana came up with the idea of a canteen for employees of the newly-formed Collectorate.Accordingly, District and Rural Development Officer Prem Kumar mobilised 10 women SHGs of the adjoining Rangampalli village and formed the Sri Bhakthaanjaneya Cooperative Credit Society and a Community Interest Group (CIG). He helped them secure 5 lakh bank loans under the Prime Minister Employment Generation Programme. The women started a Bathukamma mess and tiffin system, which was inaugurated by Mr. Devasena on March 8 last year.

Since, the women SHG members have not looked back. They managed to repay their bank loans and earn monthly wages of at least 6,000 to 8,000. Tiffin is served at 30 per plate and meals for 60 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. The women even take catering orders for outdoor functions and meetings.

President of the group Kaveti Kanaka Tara said the Collector had inspired them to take up food business instead of working in the fields. “We are really thankful to the district administration for helping our business,” she said.
