After winning recognition as Green Stations, Secunderabad and Kacheguda Railway Stations are now set to join the ‘Eco- Smart’ stations bandwagon. These two stations from the city figure in the list of 36 railway stations shortlisted from across the country for development as Eco-Smart stations by meeting environmental standards for ‘ISO-14001’ certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

Recently, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) directed Indian Railways to identify 36 stations to be developed as Eco-Smart stations by achieving green environment standards. Accordingly, the South Central Railway (SCR) identified three stations from its zone — Secunderabad, Kacheguda and Vijayawada. The NGT has laid down norms for achieving environment standard certification from BIS for selected railway stations within a specific period of time. These stations have to achieve compliance of 10 major parameters with respect to ‘ISO-14001’ certification. The parameters to be achieved include cleanliness at stations, disposal of solid waste, providing pet bottle crusher machines, taking up anti-littering activities, water management, preventing defecation along railway tracks, removal of encroachments, energy management, afforestation and plantation.

According to SCR officials, the zone has been pro-actively taking green initiatives for station development and all the three stations are recipient of the coveted Green-Co ratings from Indian Green Building Council and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII-IGBC).SCR Chief Public Relations Officer, Ch Rakesh said the three railway stations had been taking up green initiatives and has achieved 80 per cent of environment standards laid down by NGT.“In fact, Secunderabad railway station could become first station in the country to achieve ISO-14001 certification as we are giving final touches to green initiatives. Efforts are on to complete the balance works and obtain the certification by this September,” he said.

As per the environmental standards, the zone had already been maintaining the modules such as sustainable station facility, hygiene and sanitation, efficiency in energy and water, smart green initiatives and innovation and development, Rakesh added.

Secunderabad Railway Station has the distinction of being the first to be certified as ‘Green Railway Station’ on Indian Railways and get ‘Platinum Rating Certification’, the highest rating available in this category from CII-IGBC in 2017. It ranked sixth best station in cleanliness out of 75 A1 category stations in Indian Railways in the third party audit conducted by Quality Council of India (QCI) in 2018.Kacheguda Railway Station was bestowed ‘Green Railway Station’ tag with ‘Gold Rating’ from CII- IGBC in 2018 and won 14th rank in QCI audit.
