Hyderabad: Educationists who met here to discuss the draft education policy on Thursday said the way to achieve the proposed 50 per cent Gross Enrolment Ratio in higher education by 2035 was to have excellent institutions and not degree granting autonomous colleges.

Prof B.N. Reddy said, “To allow youth from 19 to 23 years to have access to high quality education it is important to change the draft. The proposed closure of 25,000 institutions should be withdrawn.” He was against promoting open and distance education.

The Center for Educational Studies and Service chairman N. Narayana said, “In the name of self-governance the public institutions must not be left out. The government cannot encourage the business of education. National Higher Education Regulatory Authority will become a weapon in the hands of the Centre and is not acceptable.”
