Hyderabad: The ruling Telangana Rashtra Samiti has swung into election mode taking Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao’s welfare and development programmes as its main agenda in the forthcoming municipal elections.

After a meeting with the party executive committee at Telangana Bhavan on Friday, TRS working president K.T. Rama Rao told reporters that since 2014 the people of the state have been strengthening the leadership of Mr Chandrasekhar Rao by supporting the party in all the elections. Thus the executive committee has resolved to take his welfare and development agenda to the people to seek their votes in the municipal elections.

He said that the New Panchayat Raj Act has yielded good results in villages across the state and the New Municipal Act which was enacted recently would also give effective and transparent administration to urban towns and cities.

Mr Rama Rao said he was confident the party would win a majority of seats. The Congress isn’t in a position to offer stiff opposition to the ruling party and the BJP lacks the strength at grassroots level to emerge as an alternative to the TRS.

He said that it was because he feared defeat that TPCC president N Uttam Kumar Reddy criticised the TRS and tried to stall the elections by moving the courts. He made it clear that district committees will chose the potential candidates to contest the elections.

Sources in the party said that during the executive committee meeting, Mr Rama Rao constituted a three-member committee to prepare the parameters required for aspirants to emerge as candidates and guide district presidents according to it.

Thereafter, district committees will shortlist the aspirants with potential. Later, a three-member panel and Mr Rama Rao will finalise the candidates.
