HYDERABAD: Leaders of the Telangana unit of the CPI(M) condemned the toppling of statues of Vladimir Lenin in Tripura. The left-wing party alleged that the Hindutva forces were trying to damage the secular fabric of the country through such acts.

Tammineni Veerabhadram, the state secretary of the CPI(M), said that if the BJP or the RSS thought that they could terrorise their rivals by vandalising statues of Vladimir Lenin or Periyar Ramaswamy, they were mistaken. He lashed out at senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy for trying to spew venom against Communist parties in the country.

Mr Veerabhadram said he suspected that the BJP top brass had a role to play in the incidents. He was especially critical of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Meanwhile, the Union ministry of home affairs issued an advisory to all states, asking them to take measures to prevent the occurrence of incidents of vandalism. “Persons indulging in such acts must be sternly dealt with and booked under relevant provisions of the law,” the ministry said in its advisory.
