It’s official now. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Telangana would come up at Bibinagar — a little over 40-km from the current major tertiary health care center i.e. Osmania General Hospital. The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare gave the approval and communicated the same to the State Health Department on Thursday.

However, the approval comes with certain riders. Listing down the conditions in an official communication dated July 26, the Ministry’s Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana division's director Sanjay Roy stated that land free of encumbrances, along with the partially-completed hospital building, should be handed over by the State to the Central government.

Besides, additional 49-acre of land adjacent to the site should also be acquired. Apart from water and power supply, the State government must also provide a four-lane approach road to the proposed site.

It may be mentioned that an additional 50-acre of land had already been acquired and added to the existing 180-acre campus. Speaking to Express, State Health minister C Laxma Reddy said that he would meet the Union Health Ministry’s team to assure them that resources mentioned would be provided.

“The premier institute has all health facilities under one roof and the campus is near the Outer Ring Road I will meet the team to discuss how to proceed. We are hopeful that the institute will start in six months,” Laxma Reddy said.
