A 10-year-old boy died after getting stuck in a lift at an apartment at Balajinagar, Medchal, on Tuesday. A Medchal police officer said the victim, Malapati Hemanth Kumar, a Class 4 student and son of watchman M.Narasimha of Thirumala Nilayam, played in front of the building after returning from school. After some time, he took the lift to the third floor but got stuck between the lift and the shaft.

“The lift was stopped at the first floor after some residents noticed the accident. By the time they pulled him out, he was dead,” said a police officer. It was not clear how the incident occurred.

One assumption is that Kumar failed to close the second iron door and the lift started moving, trapping him. Kumar’s parents were not ready to allow the police to send the body to Gandhi Hospital for the post-mortem examination but were persuaded by the police to complete legal formalties. Police booked a case under IPC Section 304A (death by negligence). The family hailing from Goginerivaripalem in Prakasam district of AP had  migrated to the city some years ago in search of livelihood.
