Differences separate, elections unite. This has turned out to be the case for an estranged couple in Telangana.

Karegeti Laxman, a local Telangana Rashtra Samithi leader from Koratapalli village in Ramadugu mandal, married Kavitha of Kothapalli mandal 11 years ago. But five years ago, they parted ways and approached the court for divorce, after the elders failed in a unity bid.

Now, the MPTC (Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituencies) election has reunited them. The initiative came from Sunke Ravishankar, the Choppadandi legislator.

After the Mothe MPTC seat was allocated to Scheduled Caste women, Mr. Laxman, who had contested the sarpanch elections and lost by a thin margin, approached the legislator asking for his mother to be nominated.Aware of the marital dispute, the legislator told Mr. Laxman that he would allocate the party ticket only to his wife. He asked him to approach his wife again with the support of elders and bring her back to the village and work for her victory.

Mr. Laxman went to his in-laws’ home in Kothapalli and prevailed upon his wife on the importance of living together and told her about the legislator’s decision on the ticket. Acting on his advice, Kavitha returned to Koratapalli and filed her nomination from Mothe constituency on the TRS ticket. The couple can be now seen campaigning together.

Society first

Mr. Laxman thanked the legislator for helping him reunite with his wife. “He was confident she would rejoin me. My wife and I decided to forget our differences for the cause of society,” he said.Mr. Ravishankar said, “I am happy that the couple has been reunited by the elections. Living together is happiness. The TRS ticket helped,” he said.
